Thank Heaven I don't have my friends problems. But sometimes, I tell you, I notice an expression on one of their faces that I recognize as gratitude.
Not to enchant but an unnamed need for order, for rhythm, for form, which three words are opposed to chaos and nothingness. --Czeslaw Milosz

40 Rules of Love
Rule 7
Whatever happens in your life, no matter how troubling things might seem, do not enter the neighbourhood of despair. Even when all doors remain closed, God will open up a new path only for you. Be thankful! It is easy to be thankful when all is well. A Sufi is thankful not only for what he has been given but also for all that he has been denied.

What keeps you up at night?
I recall a conversation I once heard on a talk show many years ago. It was Dick Cavett Show. He had three nuclear scientists on the show discussing the awful state of nuclear proliferation. What is your greatest fear, Cavett asked the scientists. The first scientist responded without hesitation: "Thermonuclear war, without a doubt." "Yes," the second scientist joined in agreement. The third scientist sitting to the far left from Cavett appeared sheepish and remained silent. When pushed for a response the scientist confessed: "My esteemed colleagues are entirely justified to be fearful of thermonuclear war. But the thing that I fear most of all," he said as he began to break up, is not being loved."

Everyone once, once only. Just once and no more.
And we also once, Never again. But this having been
once, although only once, to have been of the earth,
seems irrevocable.
And we also once, Never again. But this having been
once, although only once, to have been of the earth,
seems irrevocable.
Neither childhood nor future
grows less...surplus of existence
welling up in my heart.
